Longitudinal Health & Intellectual Disability Study (LHIDS)
![]()
Welcome to LHIDS!
About LHIDS:
There is a strong need to understand how certain health behaviors such as physical activity and nutrition relate to health outcomes in adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). If you are a caregiver of a person with ID, you are invited to participate in a survey to better understand the unique health behaviors of adults with ID.
This research is being conducted by Drs. James Rimmer and Kelly (Kueifang) Hsieh at the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Developmental Disabilities at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in partnership with Special Olympics. The study will be conducted over the course of five years. This study will create important health knowledge for serving the unique needs of people with intellectual disabilities.
Who will be study participants?
In order to qualify for the study, the adult you care for or supervise must:
1. Have an intellectual disability.
2. Be at least 18 years of age or older.
3. Live in the United States.
In order to qualify for the study, you must be:
1. A caregiver or worker associated with an adult with intellectual disabilities (e.g., a family member, residential house manager, case manager, direct support staff).
2. Knowledgeable about his or her health-related behavior (for example, physical activity levels, types of food he/she eats, and current health status).
What is the project about?
A survey will be mailed asking a variety of questions related to the health of the adult with an intellectual disability with whom you are associated.
The survey takes about 45 minutes to complete. Surveys will be conducted once per year for a period of five years. A $5 gift card will be given for every survey you complete. Postage is provided to return the surveys, and there is no cost to participate in this study.
This will be an important study of health behavior & outcomes for people with intellectual disability. This will allow advocates and health care professionals to better serve adults with ID.
